What’s going on in Washington?

On August 31, the U.S. Department of Education released proposed regulations on the supplement, not supplant provisions of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), recently revised by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Public comments will be accepted until November 7, and the final regulations are expected to be issued before President Obama ends his term in office in January 2017. (more…)

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced on August 18 the three principals who will serve as Principal Ambassador Fellows during the 2016–17 school year. The Principal Ambassador Fellowship (PAF) program was launched in 2013 to highlight the voice of the principal within the education community and the country at large. (more…)

What’s going on in Washington?

On August 5, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced the next step in President Obama’s Testing Action Plan—a competitive grant competition to help states innovate and improve the quality of assessments; enhance communications to parents, educators, and other stakeholders; and reduce redundant and ineffective testing in states and districts. Applications for the Enhanced Assessment Grants are due September 22, and ED expects to announce grantees in January 2017. (more…)

What’s going on in Washington?

Yesterday was the due date for comments to be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education in response to the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on the proposed regulations for Title I of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

NASSP coordinated with the National Association of Elementary School Principals and 58 of our state affiliates to submit joint comments on behalf of the nation’s preK–12 elementary, middle level, and high school principals. (more…)

House Education and the Workforce Committee Approves CTE Reauthorization Bill

A decade after Congress last reauthorized the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education (CTE) Act, the House Education and the Workforce Committee unanimously approved the Strengthening Career and Technical Education Act (H.R. 5587) on July 7.

“Today, we’ve taken another important step to ensure every American has access to the skills and education they need to compete in the workforce,” said Chairman John Kline (R-MN). “Career and technical education has placed countless individuals on the path to success, and this bipartisan legislation will empower more individuals to follow that same path.” (more…)

Share Your Thoughts on Proposed Position Statements

The NASSP Board of Directors has stated its intent to adopt two new position statements on A-F school grading systems and online learning. The position statements outline guiding principles for NASSP’s advocacy and recommendations to federal, state, and local policymakers. Following a 30-day public comment period, the board will vote to approve the position statements at its next meeting in May. A Historic Day for Students, Teachers, and Principals as the Senate Votes to Replace NCLB

After years of partisan bickering and months of bipartisan negotiations, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) is finally set to be reauthorized. On November 30, the House Education and the Workforce Committee released the final conference report to reauthorize ESEA. This version of ESEA will be known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (S. 1177) and will completely replace the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and the ESEA flexibility waivers.

NASSP has been advocating for a new law to replace NCLB since it technically expired in 2007, and had even formed a task force years before that to draft recommendations on how to improve the law for the nation’s middle level and high school principals. After reviewing the text of the Every Student Succeeds Act, NASSP, along with the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA) and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), was pleased to send a letter in support of the bill to the leaders of the House and Senate education committees. Principal Ambassador Fellowship Applications Open

The U.S. Department of Education is now accepting applications for the third cohort of principals to participate in the Principal Ambassador Fellowship program. Created in 2013, the program is meant to recognize the important impact that a principal has on instructional leadership, the school environment, and talent management. It is modeled on the Teaching Ambassador Fellowship program, which allows local leaders to contribute their knowledge and experience to the national dialogue about public education and learn more about education policy at the federal level.

Principals participating in the third cohort would serve during the 2016-17 school year. (more…)

Congress Considers Bill to Tackle the Homework Gap

Reps. Peter Welch (D-VT) and David McKinley (R-WV) recently introduced the Digital Learning Equity Act (H.R. 3582) to ensure students and their families have broadband Internet access in their homes. A companion bill, The Digital Learning Equity Act of 2015 (S. 1606), was introduced in the Senate by Sens. Angus King (I-ME) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV). This bill will help provide students and their families with equitable access to the Internet at home to support family engagement in their child’s education and will allow students to accomplish essential tasks such as completing their homework, applying for colleges, and seeking post-graduation employment.
