Making Student Character Development a Top Priority

Christel House Academy is a charter school that educates impoverished students in the urban core of Indianapolis, IN. Our faculty works hard to educate the whole child and help students grow not only academically, but also as people. To support this focus, we developed a program called Character & Habits of Work, or CHoW, which is an ongoing and deliberate effort to foster and examine these important traits in students.  (more…)

National Principals Month

As we wrap up National Principals Month, NASSP wants to thank all those who participated in making it such a success. Although the official National Principals Month is over, rest assured that you will still have access to all of the great materials that were created or occurred during it. The website will continue to be active so you can still access the 29 state resolutions that were passed, the recording of the Capitol Hill event, a variety of webinars and many more important resources. While the celebrations are over, it is still extremely important for school leaders to have their voices heard, so please continue to utilize these resources to make your representatives listen! National Principals Month

National Principals Month continues moving along with NASSP co-hosting an event on Capitol Hill this week entitled “Revolutionizing School Leadership Under ESSA.” As states and districts begin implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), it is important to understand how the law can provide unprecedented support for principals and other educators. This event will bring in current and former principals and educators to discuss both the policy and practitioner perspective on how to best support school leadership to improve school outcomes. National Principals Month

National Principals Month is finally here! To better understand the role and responsibilities of principals, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) is conducting its Principal Shadowing Week from October 24–27. Principal Shadowing Week allows senior staff at ED the chance to learn firsthand from NASSP members. If any members in the Maryland, Virginia, or D.C. area are interested in having an ED staffer shadow them, you can email Zach Scott for more information. (more…)

Advocacy Update

Professional Standards for Education Leaders Released

The Council of Chief State School Officers released the new Professional Standards for Educational Leaders after approval by the National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA) last month. NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti, who serves as chair of NPBEA, was quoted in an Education Week article about the release.

The 10 standards describe what effective school leaders should be able to know and do to lead high-achieving staff, schools, and students in the 21st century. They are forward-looking and connect the school leader with student learning in a direct way. (more…)

Advocacy Update

ESEA Update

The leaders of the House Education and Workforce Committee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee released a joint statement on Friday, November 13th to announce that a framework had been developed to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and they were recommending to Congressional leadership that conferees be named this week.
