National Principals Month Is Just Two Weeks Away!

Two weeks from today marks the beginning of 2017’s National Principals Month. October is a time for organizations, teachers, students, parents, legislators, and the community to celebrate the great work of principals across the country. NASSP, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the American Federation of School Administrators have a number of activities planned, including congressional resolutions recognizing the celebration; principal shadowing visits; a video contest that gives students the opportunity to thank principals for all of their hard work; and much more. Make a Video to #ThankaPrincipal

National Principals Month (NPM) happens every October and is a month-long celebration of school leaders and what they do to help students succeed. We ask that you and your students join the celebration by participating in activities such as planning a celebration for your school leader, sending them e-cards, and posting about them on social media using #ThankaPrincipal. Time to Gear Up for this Year’s National Principals Month!

This October, join NASSP, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the American Federation of School Administrators in honoring our nation’s principals during National Principals Month! Throughout the month, we urge schools, states, and government officials to make a concerted effort to recognize the impact principals have on student achievement and school success, and to show their appreciation for these tireless leaders. 2016 #ThankAPrincipal Video Contest Winners Announced

The results are in! Over 62 videos were submitted from schools across the country for the 2016 National Principals Month video contest, and we have three winners! The contest called for students to make a short video giving “props” to their principal—telling us why they love their principal and what he or she means to the students, school, and community. Each of the winning schools will receive a $200 Best Buy gift card.

The new ESSA Toolkit provides a detailed breakdown of some of the law’s most important provisions for principals. National Principals Month

As we wrap up National Principals Month, NASSP wants to thank all those who participated in making it such a success. Although the official National Principals Month is over, rest assured that you will still have access to all of the great materials that were created or occurred during it. The website will continue to be active so you can still access the 29 state resolutions that were passed, the recording of the Capitol Hill event, a variety of webinars and many more important resources. While the celebrations are over, it is still extremely important for school leaders to have their voices heard, so please continue to utilize these resources to make your representatives listen! NASSP’s Nod to the President on High School Graduation Rates

With National Principals Month in full swing, NASSP would like to give special recognition to one of its members this week. On Monday, October 17, Principal Anita Berger hosted President Obama, Secretary of Education John King, former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School in Washington, D.C. All were gathered to hear President Obama give a speech touting improved high school graduation rates.

Advocacy Update: Tracking ESSA

National Principals Month

Although we are nearing the end of National Principals Month, there is still time to advocate important issues. For example, when Congress passed a short-term continuing resolution (CR) that funds the government up to December 9, cuts were made across the board to a number of key education programs. When representatives return to Washington, D.C. after the election, new funding discussions will begin.
