Throughout October, NASSP, the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA), and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) continued the annual tradition of highlighting principals across the nation during National Principals Month (NPM). As an organization, NASSP’s primary goal and vision is to have great leaders in every school committed to the success of each student. To achieve our mission, NASSP needs support from federal legislators who are willing to introduce, support, and pass legislation aimed at benefiting school leaders and the students and faculty in their schools. NASSP presents its Congressional Champion Award to policymakers who have gone above and beyond in supporting policies that support this vision and are making it a reality. For years, National Principals Month has been dedicated to celebrating our principals who tirelessly devote themselves to their educational communities every day. This year, in light of the growing shortage of principals across the country, we’re going a step further—we’re aiming to make a real difference by fighting for and with principals. I started my day at Loudoun County High School (LCHS) in Leesburg, VA, feeling excited and a little nervous at the same time. Although I spend most of my days speaking on behalf of principals and advocating for their interests on Capitol Hill, I myself have never been an educator. And the last time I sat in a high school classroom was more than 20 years ago.
I was thrilled that LCHS Principal Michelle Luttrell was so quick to accept my request to shadow her for a day as part of our annual National Principals Month celebration. (more…)
