Of all the jobs in the world, there is no greater honor than to be a secondary school principal! The uniqueness of each day and the flurry of activity make it action-packed, and there never seems to be a dull moment. Whether it’s athletic events, concerts, homecoming, prom, classroom observations, lunch duty; the list of responsibilities is endless. It is important that we celebrate the work we do during National Principals Month and take time to reach out to our fellow colleagues from across the country and thank them for the jobs they do, day in, day out. Before the emergence of the World Wide Web, competitive endurance athletes relied on magazine ads to find like-minded locals to train with, to compete against, and to engage as a race crew. The internet broadened that scope globally and now platforms like Strava, Zwift, and MapMyFitness provide slick user interfaces which allow athletes to connect virtually through shared workouts, weekly challenges, diet and nutrition, comment areas, and more. Four years ago, I became the assistant principal at Milford Junior/Senior High School. It was September, and the principal in my building, Brandon Mowinkel, invited me to attend the Region 1 meeting of the Nebraska State Association of Secondary School Principals (NSASSP). I was unsure exactly what I was getting into, why I was going, and what I was going to do at this meeting, but as it turns out, getting involved in my region has opened many doors for me. (more…)

Do you ever stop and wonder what the traditional high school experience is preparing our students for? Are we preparing students for life beyond the high school or college classroom? Do the hours in the classroom have a direct correlation to future success? It is time we begin to reconsider the programming that we are offering in schools to ensure that our students are prepared for their futures rather than the next classroom.
Last year, we asked attendees why they keep coming back to the Ignite conference. Some of their reasons included the cutting-edge content, gaining new ideas, connecting with peers who are experiencing similar circumstances, and the conversations that happen in the halls and after sessions.

State principals of the year from around the country traveled to Washington, D.C., for a week of networking, professional development, and meetings with their members of Congress during NASSP’s annual Principal of the Year Institute. The week (September 15–18) provided principals with the opportunity to network with peers, learn about federal education legislation, and advocate for their schools and their profession.
During a professional development day, the principals took part in an Edcamp session, where they spent time discussing and sharing ideas about various topics including increasing student voice, improving math outcomes, and teacher evaluations. The principals then traveled to Capitol Hill the following day to meet with their members of Congress. (more…)
