Inspiration is the reason why, every year, I look forward to attending the NAESP conference. While at the conference, I have always wondered what it would be like to attend a leadership conference that included school leaders representing Pre-K through grade 12. I thought how great it would be to collaborate with colleagues who would lead our students on the next part of their educational journey. How great would it be to hear speakers and attend workshops about topics and issues that we all face as we lead in the 21st century? It would be eye-opening and inspiring to hear about the kinds of things students in secondary schools are learning and doing. (more…)

Join the Fight to Support Title II Funding!
President Trump’s recent budget asked for a complete elimination of Title II, Part A funds for FY 2018 and to reduce by 50 percent the amount of funds appropriated for FY 2017. To combat these cuts and show the importance Title II plays in ensuring every child has access to high-quality teachers and school leaders, NASSP recently joined with other national organizations to send a letter to the House and Senate appropriations committees asking for full funding for Title II. Remember when student learning took place in a one-room school (think “Little House on the Prairie”)? There was a time when all students were together—learning in one culture and one environment.
But as communities got bigger, we started separating students by developmental stages. As a result, students now have to transition from school to school—experiencing different cultures and curriculums each time. And there is no doubt that those transitions can be difficult. (more…)
Innovative learning requires the alignment of the entire organization, and that comes down to leadership. We know what that leadership looks like, and we now have standards that don’t just reflect that leadership, but demand it from every school leader, regardless of their context. The 2015 Professional Standards for Educational Leaders call for principals to approach every teacher conversation, every interaction with the central office, every analysis of data, with one question always in mind: How will this empower our students as learners?
