How to Train and Retain Great Principals in Struggling Urban Schools

Urban schools often face great challenges, low test scores and high dropout rates. PBS’ Eddie Aruzza of WTTW in Chicago reported on programs that train principals to succeed in struggling urban schools.

The Chicago program has four key components:

  1. Careful Screening of prospective leaders
  2. Focused Professional Learning over a period of time
  3. Peer Support through cohorts
  4. Internship under a Mentor Principal
  5. Ongoing support from a Leadership Coach

Will Miller of The Wallace Foundation identified four key indicators of successful school leadership:

  1. Vision that includes success for each and every student
  2. A strong school culture
  3. Shared Leadership
  4. Focus on Improving Classroom Instruction throught the school
