Common Core math can be a mystery, and parents are going to school to understand it

From New York to California, parents are taking lessons to learn how to help their kids with homework.

Schools Working To Familiarize Parents With Common Core Math Concepts.

The Washington Post (11/2, Layton) reports that given the significant difference between how parents learned math concepts and how their children are currently learning them under the Common Core Standards, many parents are frustrated, and schools are working to familiarize parents with the new methods. The piece focuses on Rochester, New York, which “is one of many school districts across the country teaching parents the new Common Core math” by “holding special math sessions for parents and caregivers, sending home ‘cheat sheets’ and offering homework hotlines answered by math teachers, all in an effort to explain and demystify the new approach.”
