As the dust from the election continues to settle, many in Congress have begun to turn their attention back to addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on schools. There is renewed hope for a new COVID-19 relief package following Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) recent call for legislation to be passed before the new year. While a relief package is still necessary and would help address some of the more immediate needs of schools as they navigate what are sure to be difficult winter months, policymakers are also working on legislation aimed at addressing educator job loss due to budget cuts, health concerns, and other problems stemming from the pandemic. On March 11, President Trump released the FY 2020 President’s Budget, which includes proposed spending levels for the 2020–21 school year. Like in past budget proposals, the president called for steep cuts across the board to many non-defense discretionary programs, including education. Counting cuts to Pell Grants and all other education programs, the total cuts for the Department of Education (ED) would be $8.8 billion in FY 2020, or 12.5 percent lower than ED’s enacted FY 2019 budget. Doing more with less
Virtually every school district in the nation is dealing with budget reductions. For most school leaders, there is little unjustified spending to cut, no easy targets, no low-hanging fruit. At the Early College Academy and Career Enrichment Center in Albuquerque, NM, we have examined our vision and mission and aligned budget expenditures to them. Challenged with sustaining the core function of our school—college and career readiness—yet also making budget reductions that could affect the educational experience necessary for student success, we stepped outside the box to scrutinize our options. Initial conversations were filled with lots of “less”—less materials and supplies, less technology, less PD, less electives, even less pay. What could we have more of that would not cost us any money? (more…)
Stand Up for Principals—Participate in the Title II Day of Action June 14!
Educators need the ability to better themselves in order to drive student achievement. Title II of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), also known as the Supporting Effective Instruction State Grants, offers educators this opportunity by providing federal funds to recruit, retain, and train high-quality educators. Comment on NASSP’s Position Statement on Teacher Shortage

Despite this fact, President Trump’s recent budget asks for a complete elimination of Title II, Part A funds, which are meant to recruit, retain, and support teachers and principals. However, Congress still has the ability to fund Title II, Part A. Last week, President Trump released his first budget proposal for FY 2018. In it, he called for a complete elimination of funds for Title II, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). This section provides formula funding to states for the purpose of preparing, training, recruiting, and retaining high-quality teachers, principals, assistant principals, and other school leaders. While it is extremely disheartening to see President Trump turn his back on the nation’s educators, Congress still has the ability to continue funding Title II, Part A.
